The U.S. India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) welcomes the suspension of $800 million in U.S. military aid to Pakistan. USINPAC has long been advocating conditional funding to Pakistan, and basing it on the latter’s ability to dismantle the terror infrastructure within Pakistan.USINPAC supports aid to Pakistan that will allow for economic and social reforms in that country.
The suspension of military aid by the Obama administration comes in the wake of deteriorating US-Pakistan relations particularly after the Abbotabad raid, Pakistan’s decision to expel U.S. military trainers from Pakistan and the slow pace of targeting militants in North Waziristan. Pakistan has issued contradictory statements in reaction to the aid cut, and while the Pakistan military states that it can fight terrorists without the aid, the Defense Minister has said that Pakistan cannot sustain efforts in trial areas for too long in the absence of aid.
USINPAC Chairman Sanjay Puri hoped that the military aid cut would not be rolled back and said, “Some Pakistani voices are warning that suspension of aid would decrease U.S. influence in Pakistan, and make Pakistan less cooperative. However, after spending billions of dollars in aid, the U.S. reserves the right to demand concrete results in fighting insurgents, and not hostile actions such as the expulsion of U.S. military trainers.”
