Tulsi Gabbard serves as a Councilmember on the Honolulu City Council, representing over 100,000 constituents within the urban Honolulu community. Tulsi is Chair of the Safety, Economic Development and Government Affairs Committee, and Vice-Chair of the Budget Committee.Previously elected to the Hawaiʼi State House of Representatives at the age of 21, Tulsi earned the distinction of being the youngest legislator ever elected in Hawaiʼi, and the youngest woman ever elected in the nation. While in office, she served on the Education, Higher Education, Tourism, and Economic Development committees. She withdrew from an easy re-election campaign when she volunteered for an 18-monthlong deployment to Iraq with the Hawaiʼi Army National Guard in 2004; itsʼ first major deployment since the Vietnam war. Upon returning home, she attended the Alabama Military Academyʼs Officer Candidate School, and became the first female Distinguished Honor Graduate in the academyʼs 50-year history.Tulsi went on to serve in the U.S. Senate as a Legislative Assistant for Senator Daniel K. Akaka. She advised him on issues relating to veteran affairs, energy and natural resources, judiciary, and homeland security. After two years in Washington, DC, Tulsi deployed to the Middle East a second time, and served as a Military Police platoon leader. Part of her mission included providing training to the Kuwait National Guardʼs Counter-Terrorism Team. For this work, she became the first woman ever to receive an award from the Kuwait National Guard. In addition to her two Middle East deployments, Tulsi has traveled extensively throughout Asia, the Pacific, and Eastern Europe, gaining practical knowledge and understanding of the challenges we face around the world.Tulsi continues to serve in the Hawaiʼi Army National Guard, as a Captain and a Company Commander. Her military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, The Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and The Army Good Conduct Medal. She is also a recipient of the German Armed Forces Military Proficiency Badge and the Combat Field Medical Badge.She is also Vice President and Co-founder of a successful environmental nonprofit, Healthy Hawaiʼi Coalition, which focuses on grassroots organizing and advocacy, and education programs for our youth.
