Indian-American Congressman Ro Khanna Member of Key House Committees

Washington D.C.: Congressman Ro Khanna is a member of the House Armed Services, Budget, and Oversight Committees.

The House Armed Services Committee has jurisdiction for laws pertaining to the United States military and also exercises oversight on the annual national defense budget. The Budget Committee drafts the annual budget resolution that sets revenue and spending levels in each fiscal year. The Oversight Committee is the primary investigative Committee in Congress.

USINPAC commends Congressman Khanna for being selected as a Member of these Committees, which are important not only to the nation but throughout the world. USINPAC also commends Congressman Khanna’s efforts to represent the interests of Silicon Valley.

“The Indian American community has come of age in Silicon Valley,” Sanjay Puri, Chairman of USINPAC said. In 2015, Prime Minister Modi visited Silicon Valley – which was a first for an Indian Prime Minister in 33 years. PM Modi spoke at the San Jose SAP Center, and then Democratic Leader, now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi attended. “One of the most striking comments by the PM was that Indian Americans in Silicon Valley caused the world to change the way it looks at India,” Puri said. “Fast forward to 2018 when 11 Indian-American women entrepreneurs were recognized as the most successful female leaders by the Silicon Valley Business Journal and we can now say Indian Americans are influencers who are taking charge and sparking change everywhere.”

This includes areas like bringing Silicon Valley to the Defense Department, an issue that Congressman Khanna is leading. Prior to being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Khanna specialized in intellectual property law, and served as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Obama Administration. His parents immigrated to the United States from India – and his grandfather was active in Gandhi’s independence movement. Khanna said he is pleased to be able to conduct oversight on any matter he believes would serve the American people.
