India provision in the Defense Bill moves ahead

Washington DC :As reported by USINPAC, the House and Senate will have to conference their FY2020 National Defense Authorization (NDAA) bills before presenting a final package to the President for signature. When the House and Senate go to conference, this means they work out their differences between the two bills.

The Senate and House have major disagreements over some of the provisions in their respective bills. However, the intent involving India are identical in both bills so the language involving cooperation in the Western Indian Ocean and advising the executive branch to seek news ways to recognize India as a Major Defense Partner of the United States should remain in place, no matter what the negotiations may be regarding the final version of the FY2020 NDAA.

“We are confident that Chairman Sherman, Congressman Wilson, Senator Cornyn and Senator Warner and the many other House and Senate Members, including Senator Harris, Congressman Bera and Congresswoman Gabbard, will continue to support India throughout this process,” said Sanjay Puri, Chairman of USINPAC.

“USINPAC will also stay engaged after the FY2020 NDAA becomes law because our end game is NATO equivalency for India, which the final bill will not offer. We are appreciative of the steps forward this bill may offer but in the very near future we must move from advisement to actuality if we are serious about bolstering the US-India partnership,” Puri concluded.
