Veerendra – usinpac http://www.usinpac.com/new_usinpac The Voice of Indian-Americans Fri, 06 May 2016 12:57:16 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.4.32 INDIAN AMERICANS SUPPORT U.S. LNG EXPORTS TO INDIA; OPTIMISTIC ABOUT OBAMA-MODI SUMMIT http://www.usinpac.com/new_usinpac/latest-news/indian-americans-support-u-s-lng-exports-to-india-optimistic-about-obama-modi-summit-2 Wed, 30 Mar 2016 13:05:44 +0000 http://www.usinpac.com/new_usinpac/?p=806 30 July 2014; Washington D.C.: Today, on Capitol Hill, the US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), a bipartisan grassroots organization, hosted a packed legislative briefing demonstrating strong support for U.S. export of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to India.  The event was a culmination of a year-long effort to demonstrate to lawmakers a cogent public interest case for supporting LNG export to countries such as India, which is an early signatory of the W.T.O. (World Trade Organization) Treaty as well as a major U.S. trade-partner, but not a signatory of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States.  At present, U.S. LNG export is limited to countries that are FTA signatories.

Rahul Srinivasan, USINPAC Director (LNG Initiative) commented: “The focus of our grassroots campaign has been to support two House bills (H.R.6, H.R. 2771) and a Senate companion bill (S.2494).  If passed, the bills are intended to change current law and enable U.S. exports to India.”

Several members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee and co-sponsors of the House Bills addressed the USINPAC-organized legislative briefing.

Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX):  “Like the Blue Bell ice cream company, our motto on LNG should be: We eat all we can, and we sell the rest. Where should we sell it? India.”

Rep. James Lankford (R-OK):  “Exporting LNG is in the geopolitical best interest of the US and India.”

Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX):  “India buys natural gas from countries we don’t like and they don’t like… When I visited India last December, I saw a healthy democracy there … In India, I saw a strong willingness to work with America.”

USINPAC Chairman Sanjay Puri noted:  “Through our regular interaction with lawmakers and their staff, topical Congressional Hearings, and our dialogue with Industry leaders who serve on our LNG Initiative Executive Committee, we are convinced that U.S. LNG export to India will significantly further the U.S.-India strategic partnership.”

Mr. Puri added:  “We would like to see a break-through in the recent impasse in bilateral relations.  An agreement on LNG trade during the September summit between President Obama and Prime Minister Modi will surely re-energize a partnership that is critical in these challenging times.”  A historic first on Capitol Hill to be solely focused on U.S. LNG export to India, this was a point reiterated by the distinguished expert-panel at today’s briefing,: Ankit Desai, Cheniere Energy; Sadanand Dhume, American Enterprise Institute; Dr. David Montgomery, NERA Economic Consulting; Dr. Michael Canes, Logistics Management Institute; Erik Milito, American Petroleum Institute; and Sandra Safro, K & L Gates LLP.

Democrat for North Carolina State Senate

Biography

Jay Chaudhuri

Democrat for North Carolina State Senate

Senate District 16 Represents the Most Diverse District in the State

State Senate District 16 runs from downtown Raleigh to Chatham Square in Cary to Morrisville to Brier Creek.  It encompasses North Carolina State University, SAS, and the Raleigh-Durham Airport.  It is also home to a number of religious institutions, including the Hindu Society of North Carolina Temple, S.V. Temple, and BAPS Temple.

The Election Will be Won By Turn Out, Including Indian-Americans

The election will be won by turning out Democratic voters in the May 2016 primary.  Projected vote totals for the primary will likely comprise between 18,000 to 20,000 voters.  The campaign’s goal will be to reach 40 percent (between 7,200 to 8,000 votes).  A secondary strategy will be to aggressively turn out Indian American voters that already make 1,500 voters.  However, Indian American voters can comprise up to 6,800 voters, almost a third of the primary voters.  This strategy involves deploying significant financial resources to deploy the right message and communications.

Jay Chaudhuri is the Ideal Candidate for this District

Jay Chaudhuri has devoted his life to public service. His hard work and service the last decade and a half to both State Treasurer Janet Cowell and Attorney General Roy Cooper have resulted in his recognition as a national and state leader on a wide range of legal and policy issues by organizations such as the North Carolina Bar Association and the National Association of Attorneys General.  As General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor to Treasurer Cowell, Jay has helped recover more than $100 million back to the pension and escheat funds. As Special Counsel to Attorney General Cooper, Jay helped lead an investigation by all 50 Attorneys General that resulted in a landmark agreement with the two leading social networking sites, MySpace and Facebook, to better protect children from Internet predators.  Born in Chattanooga, Jay is the son of immigrants who moved to Fayetteville in 1972. He is a product of North Carolina public schools. He is married to Sejal Mehta, a former New York City prosecutor. They have two children and a black lab.

The Campaign Can Win By Meeting Its Financial Goals

Jay has resigned as General Counsel to Treasurer Cowell to devote the personal time necessary to reach voters and raise money.  This district is one of the most competitive districts in the State and will require significant financial resources.  In 2008, both incumbent Senator Josh Stein and his opponent spent $350,000 each in the Democratic primary.  The campaign projects the need to raise $500,000 in the primary in order to deploy the necessary resources to win.

“Our nation’s capitol needs an elected Indian-American! Thanks to USINPAC for their support.”

Biography

Kishan Putta was elected locally in 2012 and is now the first Indian-American to ever run for high office in our nation’s capital! The DC Council is the equivalent of a State Senate.

Kishan is a former journalist who attended Dartmouth College and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He moved to DC as a health policy reporter and then transitioned to working on health policy in the nonprofit sector, public sector, and private sector, now as a consultant.

Most recently Kishan helped DC successfully implement President Obama’s health care law. He helpedDC Health Link run a citywide campaign to enroll over 50,000 people in health insurance coverage. Many were sick and needed care. Many had never been covered before and had not had a medical checkup in many years. He was proud to be part of this historic national effort, but even prouder to be able to serve the District. Kishan’s journalism experience (LA Times, Inside Washington) taught him to always view issues from all perspectives and to treat all sides fairly in my coverage. That background has been very helpful in getting results through Kishan’s local and city-wide efforts, working with all sides respectfully, even when they disagree. He was elected to the Dupont Circle ANC in 2012 and spends dozens of hours every week trying to improve District policies and services and to get results for residents.

Kishan has collaborated, persisted, and organized successful community efforts (without any staff or budget) to increase affordable early childhood education opportunities, to make our streets safer, to make our precious greenspaces more usable for more groups/purposes, and to improve transportation (buses/bikes) on some of DC’s busiest corridors, and in underserved areas as well…

FUN-FACT: Kishan has co-written two travel guides: “Let’s Go: Chile” and “Let’s Go: India & Nepal”! You can view Kishan’s record and results HERE and please connect with us on Facebook (kishanfordc) &Twitter (@kishanputta) to follow and interact with us
