Levels of US-India Trade are blossoming, while the total value of bilateral trade has doubled since 2001 and both governments intend to see it double by 2009. U.S. exports to India in 2006 had a total value of $10.1 billion, which included aircrafts, business and telecommunications equipment, jewelry, fertilizers, and chemicals. In this same year, imports from India to the U.S. had a total value of $21.8 billion, which included cotton apparel, textiles, pearls, gemstones, and jewelry.
Recent estimates indicate the HIV prevalence rate in India, which has a population of 1 billion people, is less than 1 percent, but the low rate belies the looming pandemic on the horizon. More than 4.5 million people in India are estimated to be HIV positive, and the epidemic is reported to be spreading rapidly from urban to rural areas and from high-risk groups to general population.
