November 30, 2010, Washington D.C: The U.S. India Political Action Committee (USINPAC) congratulates Sen. Swati Dandekar (IA) for being elected the President of the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL). USINPAC has been associated with and supporting Sen. Swati Dandekar since her election to the Iowa House of Representatives in 2002.
Sen. Dandekar was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2008 and serves the people of District 18. She serves on the Commerce, Economic Growth, Transportation, Rebuild Iowa, and Ways & Means committees. She is also a member of the Economic Development Budget Subcommittee. Swati was the first person of Indian origin to win a seat to be elected to the Iowa Legislature. Her legislative priorities are economic growth, renewable energy, affordable healthcare and educational excellence.
The National Foundation for Women Legislators is a non-partisan organization whose membership is made up of women serving as current state legislators and former state legislators. It was founded in 1932 with the mission to encourage greater participation of women in establishing public policy and their appointment in public office.
Sanjay Puri, Chairman of USINPAC congratulated Senator Dandekar and said, "The NFWL has played an important role in encouraging women across the country to participate in federal, state and local legislative processes. Sen. Dandekar is a role model for Indian-American women and her appointment would further motivate them to participate in the political and legislative process of the country."
In 2010, 90 women serve in the U.S. Congress, (Senate: 17, House: 73). The number of women in statewide elective executive posts is 73, while the proportion of women in state legislatures is at 24.3%. In 2010, 1,797, or 24.3%, of the 7,382 state legislators in the United States are women.
