Congressional seat in New Jersey is considered a Republican bastion
Washington, DC: Indian American social worker and businessman Peter Jacob is one of the sixty other liberal democrats running for local, state and Congressional offices this November included in the preferred list of candidates on Senator Sanders’s new initiative ‘Our New Revolution’ website. The only campaign to be endorsed by Sanders, for a seat in New Jersey, the New Revolution website describes Jacob as "Raised in Union, New Jersey, in an Indian-American family, Peter understands how important a safe and caring community is to success."
Our Revolution, a non-profit organization, is a continuation of Sanders 2016 Democrat primary campaign, when millions of new supporters joined the movement for its progressive political agenda. Our Revolution aims to revitalize American democracy, empower progressive leaders and elevate the political consciousness.
Peter Jacob hopes to unseat Republican incumbent Leonard Lance in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, considered a strong Republican bastion. The party has retained this seat for the last 100 years, except for six years between 1975-1981. This is the same seat from where Upendra Chivukula, the first Indian American to be elected to the New Jersey State Assembly, tried his luck in 2012 and lost to Lance by more than 50,000 votes.
Jacob, whose parents immigrated from India in 1986, hope the Sanders’ endorsement would help him enter the Congress. An alumnus of Union County College, in New Jersey, Jacob continued undergraduate studies in Sociology at Kean University. Soon after, Peter studied at Washington University in St Louis, earning a Master of Social Work from the top-ranked program in the nation. Jacob promises to work on challenges regarding wealth and income inequality, unemployment, veterans affairs, tax fairness, criminal justice, and the addiction epidemic.
There are some serious Indian Americans contenders for a seat in the House this November. Ami Bera, the only Indian American in the current Congress, is seeking reelection for the third term from California, Raja Krishnamoorthi from a suburb in Chicago, Ro Khanna from Silicon Valley and Pramila Jayapal from Washington State.
Sanjay Puri, Chairman of USINPAC remarked, “USINPAC congratulates Peter Jacob on winning an endorsement from Senator Sanders. This is really valuable, it will encourage the people of New Jersey to come out in record numbers to canvass for Peter and makes his campaign a success.”
