Former Governor of Virginia seen to be a great friend of India
Washington, DC: With the Democratic National Convention (DNC) underway in Philadelphia, Indian Americans welcomed with enthusiasm the announcement of Senator Tim Kaine as the party’s Vice Presidential nominee. Shekhar Narasimhan, Co-chair of DNC’S Indo American Council, at the Clinton-Kaine rally where the announcement was made, declared "Kaine will help propel Hillary Clinton to victory in 2016 and importantly, will be a great partner in governing this country,"
Silicon Valley-based Indian American entrepreneur Mr. M Rangaswami characterized Kaine as a "Great friend of Indian-Americans and India".
Sanjay Mittal, CEO of a Richmond-area healthcare technology company, echoed the sentiment. “Senator Kaine is a good friend of the Indian American community and is very popular among Virginians,” he said, adding that the United States “will be in good hands with Sen. Kaine as the vice president.”
Kaine, as Governor of Virginia and as Senator has worked closely with Northern Virginia’s Indian-American tech sector for several years. In 2007, Kaine as Governor, led a delegation of more than 100 business and government leaders on a trade mission to three Indian cities. As a keynote speaker at the 2014 annual gala of the American India Foundation Kaine had praised ‘the strength and diversity of the talent pool of the Indian American community in our country.’
During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on India in May, Kaine recollected his visit to India in October 2014. He went to the Mazgaon Docks in Mumbai to see the India ship building industry and had mused that when he had started on the committee, they always talked about the Asia Pacific and now it is always Indo-Asia Pacific.
Anjan Chimaladinne, Delegate for Hillary Clinton from DNC 2016 remarks, “I have known Tim Kaine for 10 years. His experience at every level - Local (City Councilman and Mayor), State (Lieutenant Governor and Governor), and Federal (US Senator) would absolutely make him a wonderful Vice President. I ran for City Council last November and Senator Kaine gave me a wonderful endorsement - am extremely thankful for that. Like millions of Virginians, I am extremely excited about the value that he brings to the ticket. He's also the Governor who established Asian American Advisory Board to have our voices heard. Tim Kaine is humble, smart, genuine, knows what the role requires of him, and is extremely comfortable and ready. In my opinion, Secretary Clinton made a brilliant choice.”
