I thank USINPAC for trusting my ability to serve as the Mayor of the city of Madison, Alabama. It is high time that more Indian Americans serve our great nation, the United States of America, by getting elected to public offices at local, state, and federal level. Sitting on the side lines is not an option. It is our civic responsibility to vote."

Hanu Karlapalem's mayoral race in Madison, AL has the largest concentration of Indian Americans.


Hanu has a Master’s degree in Management Information Systems from UAH. He has over 28 years of work and entrepreneurial experience in business, engineering, information technology, and non-profit organizations. He successfully founded and managed three small businesses in air ionization and air purification systems, industrial and commercial lighting, and oil reclamation.


Hanu began his career as a shift engineer at a steel pipe manufacturing plant. He has also worked as a part time Instructor in Management Information Systems and as an affiliate member of the graduate faculty at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.


As a volunteer leader in non-profit organizations he provides visionary leadership to these groups. He is an Advisory Council Member of Global Ties Alabama (GTA, a member of Global Ties US affiliated to the U.S. Department of State) GTA, formerly ISC, promotes "Citizen Diplomacy" around the world “one hand shake at a time.”


Hanu is considered a "Citizen Diplomat" for the U.S. Department of State.  He served as a Board Member of ISC from 2007 to 2013, including a term as Vice-President. Hanu also served as a Board Member of UAH Alumni Association from 2009 to 2015.
